The territory

The role of the Soprintendenza includes the looking after, conservation, research, development and promotion of the archaeological heritage of a territory which includes 90 boroughs in the province of Viterbo and in the northern part of the province of Rome. It manages ten museums and important archaeological areas distributed throughout the territory. The necropolises of Tarquinia and Cerveteri are especially noteworthy and appear in the Unesco World Heritage list. The Soprintendenza also has the responsibility of safeguarding the archeological sites which are located on the coast and in the surroundings around the lakes of Bolsena, Bracciano, Martignano and Vico.

A significant part of the archaeological patrimony of this territory is the Etruscan civilization, which flourished between the 9th century BC and the Roman Age.
