Protection of the territory

The Legislative Decree no. 42 of 22 January 2004 "Codice dei Beni Culturali e del Paesaggio" (code of the Cultural and Landscape Heritage), pursuant to article 10 of law no. 137 of 6 July 2002, is regulated by the territorial guardianship of archaeological heritage. This so-called "codice Urbani" has modified the previous legislation, in particular the law 1089 of the 1st June 1939, "Tutela delle cose di interesse storico artistico" (protection of things of historical and artistic interest).

The complete text of the Code of Cultural and Landscape Heritage (D. Lgs. 42 of 22 January 2004 and later reviews, D. Lgs 156 of 24 March 2006, D. Lgs. 62 of 26 March 2008) is available on the official website of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, section Normative.

The Superintendence issues regulations and warrants for public and private projects which involve areas whose archaeological importance is well-known, in particular pursuant to D. L. 42/2004.

The area for which the Superintendence is responsible is managed by archaeological functionaries, organized according to municipality.
